How To Wire A Ceiling Light With 3 Cables

Wiring a ceiling light with 3 cables may seem like a daunting task, but it's actually quite simple with the right instructions. Follow these steps to safely and correctly wire your ceiling light.

Ceiling light fixture

Wire strippers

Electrical tape

Step 1: Turn Off the Power

Before you start working on the electrical system, it's important to turn off the power to the circuit that powers the ceiling light. You can do this by flipping the circuit breaker or removing the fuse that corresponds to the circuit.

Step 2: Remove the Old Light Fixture

Once the power is off, you can remove the old ceiling light fixture. To do this, simply unscrew the screws that hold the fixture in place and carefully pull it down from the ceiling.

Step 3: Identify the Wires

Once the old light fixture is removed, you will see three wires coming out of the ceiling: a black wire, a white wire, and a green or bare copper wire. The black wire is the "hot" wire, the white wire is the "neutral" wire, and the green or bare copper wire is the "ground" wire.

Step 4: Connect the Wires

Now it's time to connect the wires from the ceiling to the wires from the new light fixture. To do this, simply twist the ends of the wires together and then wrap them with electrical tape.
