How to Install Can Lights in Drywall Ceiling

Can lights, also known as recessed lighting, are a great way to add both style and functionality to your home. They can brighten up dark corners, highlight artwork, or simply provide general illumination. If you're thinking about installing can lights in your drywall ceiling, here's a step-by-step guide to help you get the job done right.

Materials and Tools You'll Need

* Can lights * Electrical wire * Wire connectors * Electrical box * Drywall saw * Drill * Screwdriver * Level * Pencil

Step 1: Choose the Location of Your Can Lights

The first step is to decide where you want to place your can lights. Once you have a general idea, mark the locations on the ceiling with a pencil. Make sure to space the lights evenly and avoid placing them too close to the walls or other obstacles.

Step 2: Cut the Holes for the Can Lights

Once you have marked the locations of your can lights, it's time to cut the holes in the drywall. To do this, you'll need a drywall saw. Carefully cut out the holes, making sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific can lights you're using.

Step 3: Install the Electrical Box

The next step is to install the electrical box. The electrical box will house the wires and connections for the can light. To install the electrical box, simply insert it into the hole in the drywall and secure it with screws.

Step 4: Run the Electrical Wire

Once the electrical box is installed, it's time to run the electrical wire. The electrical wire will connect the can light to the power source. To run the electrical wire, simply feed it through the hole in the drywall and connect it to the terminals on the electrical box.

Step 5: Connect the Wires

Once the electrical wire is run, it's time to connect the wires. To do this, use wire connectors to connect the black wire from the can light to the black wire from the electrical box. Connect the white wire from the can light to the white wire from the electrical box. And connect the green wire from the can light to the green wire from the electrical box.

Step 6: Install the Can Light

Once the wires are connected, it's time to install the can light. To do this, simply insert the can light into the hole in the drywall and twist it clockwise until it's secure.

Step 7: Trim the Hole

The last step is to trim the hole around the can light. To do this, use a utility knife to cut the drywall around the edge of the can light. Be careful not to cut too much drywall, as this could damage the can light.
