How to Change a Pull Cord on a Ceiling Fan
Ceiling fans are an excellent way to keep your home cool and comfortable during hot weather. However, if the pull cord on your ceiling fan breaks, it can be frustrating and inconvenient. Fortunately, changing a pull cord is a relatively simple task that you can do yourself with a few basic tools.
To change the pull cord on your ceiling fan, you will need:
- A new pull cord
- A Phillips screwdriver
- A pair of pliers
- A ladder
Before starting, make sure that the power to the ceiling fan is turned off at the circuit breaker or fuse box. Once the power is off, you can climb the ladder and remove the canopy from the ceiling fan. The canopy is the decorative cover that hides the wiring and motor of the fan.
With the canopy removed, you will see the switch housing. The switch housing is the metal box that contains the switch and pull cord. Remove the two screws that hold the switch housing in place and carefully lift it off the fan.
Inside the switch housing, you will see the old pull cord. Unhook the old pull cord from the switch and pull it out of the switch housing.
Now, take the new pull cord and thread it through the hole in the switch housing. Tie a knot in the end of the pull cord to prevent it from pulling back through the hole.
Next, hook the other end of the pull cord onto the switch. Make sure that the pull cord is pulled all the way through the switch housing so that there is no slack.
Now, you can reattach the switch housing to the ceiling fan. Insert the two screws that hold the switch housing in place and tighten them securely.
Finally, you can replace the canopy on the ceiling fan. Make sure that the canopy is securely in place before turning the power back on.
Once the power is back on, you can test the new pull cord. Pull the cord to turn the fan on and off and adjust the speed of the fan.
