Replacing a Pull Cord on a Ceiling Light

A broken or faulty pull cord can prevent you from easily turning on or off your ceiling lights. Replacing the pull cord is a simple task that you can complete in a few minutes with the right tools and materials.

Materials you'll need:

  • New pull cord
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire strippers
  • Electrical tape
  • Ladder

Instructions:

  1. Turn off the power. Before you start working on the light fixture, make sure to turn off the power at the breaker or fuse box.
  2. Remove the light fixture. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the light fixture to the ceiling. Carefully lower the fixture until it is completely detached.
  3. Disconnect the wires. There will be two wires connected to the pull cord switch. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws that hold the wires in place and disconnect them.
  4. Remove the pull cord switch. Once the wires are disconnected, you can remove the pull cord switch from the fixture. It is usually held in place by a small screw or clip.
  5. Install the new pull cord. Take the new pull cord and insert it into the hole in the switch. Tighten the screw or clip to hold it in place.
  6. Connect the wires. Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the wires. Twist the exposed wires together and secure them with electrical tape.
  7. Reinstall the light fixture. Lift the light fixture back up to the ceiling and align it with the mounting screws. Tighten the screws to secure the fixture.
  8. Turn on the power. Go back to the breaker or fuse box and turn on the power. Test the pull cord to make sure it is working properly.

Tips:

  • If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to call a qualified electrician to replace the pull cord.
  • Be sure to use the correct size pull cord for your light fixture. A cord that is too short or too long will not work properly.
  • If the pull cord is frayed or damaged, it is important to replace it as soon as possible to avoid a safety hazard.
