Fixing a Ceiling Fan Light Pull Chain
Ceiling fans are a great way to keep your home cool and comfortable, and they can also add a touch of style to any room. However, if the light pull chain on your ceiling fan breaks, it can be a major inconvenience. Fortunately, it's relatively easy to fix. With a few simple tools and a little bit of time, you can have your light pull chain back up and running in no time.
What You'll Need
- Replacement light pull chain
- Screwdriver
- Wire cutters
- Electrical tape
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Turn off the power to the ceiling fan. This is important for safety reasons. You can do this by flipping the circuit breaker or removing the fuse that powers the fan.
- Remove the light fixture cover. Most light fixture covers are held in place by screws. Simply remove the screws and carefully lift off the cover.
- Locate the light pull chain switch. The switch is typically located on the side of the light fixture.
- Disconnect the wires from the switch. There will be two wires connected to the switch. Use the wire cutters to cut the wires about 6 inches from the switch.
- Strip the ends of the wires. Use a wire stripper to remove about 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the wires.
- Connect the wires to the new switch. Twist the bare ends of the wires together and then wrap them with electrical tape.
- Install the new light pull chain. simply insert the chain into the hole in the switch and pull it through until it is the desired length.
- Reattach the light fixture cover. Carefully align the cover with the light fixture and then screw it into place.
- Turn on the power to the ceiling fan. Test the light pull chain to make sure it is working properly.
Tips
- If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to hire a qualified electrician to fix the light pull chain.
- Be careful not to cut the wires too short. If the wires are too short, you will not be able to connect them to the new switch.
- Make sure to wrap the electrical tape around the wires tightly. This will help to prevent the wires from coming loose and causing a short circuit.
