How to Replace Ceiling Can Lights with LED

Replacing ceiling can lights with LED is a relatively simple and straightforward task that can be completed in a matter of minutes. However, there are a few important things to keep in mind before you get started.

1. Safety First

Before you begin any electrical work, it is important to turn off the power to the circuit that you will be working on. This can be done by flipping the breaker or removing the fuse that corresponds to the circuit. Once the power is off, you can proceed to remove the old can light.

2. Remove the Old Can Light

To remove the old can light, first use a screwdriver to remove the trim ring. Once the trim ring is removed, you will see the can light housing. There are two screws that hold the can light housing in place. Remove these screws and carefully pull the can light housing out of the ceiling.

3. Disconnect the Wires

Once the can light housing is removed, you will need to disconnect the wires. There are two wires that connect the can light to the electrical circuit. Use a pair of pliers to disconnect the wires. Be careful not to touch the bare wires with your hands.

4. Install the New LED Can Light

To install the new LED can light, first insert the can light housing into the ceiling. Make sure that the housing is flush with the ceiling. Then, connect the wires to the LED can light. Be sure to connect the black wire to the black wire and the white wire to the white wire. Once the wires are connected, secure the can light housing in place with the two screws.

5. Install the Trim Ring

Once the can light housing is secure, you can install the trim ring. The trim ring simply snaps into place over the can light housing. Once the trim ring is in place, your new LED can light is ready to use.

6. Turn on the Power

Once the new LED can light is installed, you can turn on the power to the circuit. Your new LED can light should now be working.

7. Tips

Here are a few tips for replacing ceiling can lights with LED:

  • Make sure that the new LED can light is the same size as the old can light.
  • If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to hire a qualified electrician to replace your can lights.
  • LED can lights are more energy-efficient than traditional incandescent can lights, so you can save money on your energy bills by making the switch.
