How to Install Can Lighting in a Drop Ceiling

Can lighting is a versatile and energy-efficient way to illuminate any space. It is installed in the ceiling, providing a diffused light that is perfect for general illumination or accent lighting. Installing can lighting in a drop ceiling is a relatively easy DIY project that can be completed in a few hours.

Materials and Tools You'll Need

  • Can lights
  • Junction box
  • Electrical wire
  • Wire nuts
  • Screwdriver
  • Drill
  • Wire stripper

Step 1: Choose the Location

Decide where you want to install the can lights. Consider the size of the room, the placement of furniture, and the desired lighting effect. Mark the locations of the can lights on the drop ceiling grid.

Step 2: Cut the Holes

Use a drill to cut holes in the ceiling tiles for the can lights. The size of the holes will vary depending on the size of the can lights. Make sure that the holes are centered on the grid lines.

Step 3: Install the Junction Box

Attach a junction box to the back of the ceiling tile above each hole. The junction box will house the electrical connections for the can light.

Step 4: Wire the Can Lights

Cut the electrical wire to length and strip the ends of the wire. Connect the black wire from the can light to the black wire in the junction box. Connect the white wire from the can light to the white wire in the junction box. Twist the bare ends of the wires together and secure them with wire nuts.

Step 5: Install the Can Lights

Insert the can lights into the holes in the ceiling tiles. Twist the can lights clockwise to lock them in place. Make sure that the can lights are level and secure.

Step 6: Test the Lights

Turn on the power to the can lights and test them to make sure they are working properly. If any of the lights are not working, check the electrical connections.

Safety Tips

  • Always turn off the power before working on electrical fixtures.
  • Make sure that all electrical connections are secure.
  • Do not overload the electrical circuit.
  • If you are not comfortable working with electricity, hire a qualified electrician.
