How to Change a Ceiling Mount Light Fixture

Updating the light fixtures in your home is an easy and affordable way to refresh the look of any room. It's a relatively simple task that anyone can do with the right tools and instructions. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to change a ceiling mount light fixture.

Tools and Materials:

New ceiling mount light fixture
Screwdriver
Electrical tape
Wire cutter
Step ladder

Safety First:

Turn off the power to the light fixture at the circuit breaker or fuse box.

Step 1: Remove the Old Fixture

Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the canopy (the decorative cover) in place.
Carefully pull down the canopy to expose the wires.
Identify the black (hot) wires and white (neutral) wires. Wrap the ends of the wires with electrical tape to prevent them from touching each other.
Use a wire cutter to cut the old fixture's wires close to the ceiling.

Step 2: Connect the New Fixture

Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation off the ends of the new fixture's wires.
Twist the exposed ends of the black wires together and wrap them with electrical tape.
Twist the exposed ends of the white wires together and wrap them with electrical tape.
Connect the black wire from the new fixture to the black wire from the ceiling and connect the white wire from the new fixture to the white wire from the ceiling. Wrap the connections with electrical tape to insulate them.
Feed the wires back into the electrical box and push the fixture up into place.
