How to Connect Wires to a Ceiling Light

Replacing or installing a ceiling light is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few steps. However, it is important to remember that working with electricity can be dangerous, so it is always best to follow safety precautions and consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure about any part of the process.

Before you begin, you will need to gather the following materials:

A new ceiling light
A Phillips screwdriver
A wire cutter
A wire stripper
Electrical tape
A ladder

Once you have gathered your materials, follow these steps to connect the wires to your ceiling light:

Turn off the power to the ceiling light at the circuit breaker.
Remove the old ceiling light. To do this, you will need to unscrew the screws that hold the light in place and then carefully pull the light down.
Identify the wires in the ceiling. There will be two or three wires in the ceiling: a black wire, a white wire, and (in some cases) a green or bare copper wire.
Strip the insulation off the ends of the wires. To do this, use a wire stripper to remove about 1/2 inch of insulation from the end of each wire.
Connect the wires to the ceiling light. The black wire should be connected to the black wire on the light, the white wire should be connected to the white wire on the light, and the green or bare copper wire should be connected to the green or bare copper wire on the light.
Twist the wires together and secure them with electrical tape. Make sure that the connections are tight and that there are no loose wires.
Push the wires back into the ceiling box and screw the ceiling light into place.
Turn on the power to the ceiling light at the circuit breaker.

If you have followed these steps carefully, your ceiling light should now be properly connected.
