How to Cover a Ceiling Electrical Box

Electrical boxes on ceilings can be unsightly, especially if they are not flush with the ceiling or if the paint around them is peeling or damaged. Fortunately, covering a ceiling electrical box is a relatively easy and inexpensive project that can be completed in a few hours.

To get started, you will need the following materials:

A ceiling medallion
A light fixture that is the same size or larger than the ceiling medallion
Electrical tape
A screwdriver
A wire cutter
A drill
Drywall screws
Caulk

Once you have gathered your materials, you can follow these steps to cover the ceiling electrical box:

Turn off the power to the light fixture at the circuit breaker or fuse box.
Remove the light fixture from the ceiling by unscrewing the screws that hold it in place.
Disconnect the wires from the light fixture by unscrewing the wire nuts and pulling the wires apart.
Wrap the exposed ends of the wires with electrical tape to prevent them from touching each other.
Place the ceiling medallion over the electrical box and mark the holes for the screws.
Drill pilot holes for the screws.
Screw the ceiling medallion into place.
Connect the wires from the light fixture to the wires from the electrical box.
Screw the light fixture into place.
Turn on the power to the light fixture.

Your ceiling electrical box is now covered and your light fixture is back in place.
