How to Install a Can Light in an Existing Ceiling

Can lights, also known as recessed lights, offer a sleek and modern way to illuminate a room. They are perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas where you need bright, focused lighting. Installing a can light in an existing ceiling is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a few hours.

Tools and Materials

  • Can light
  • Drill
  • Hole saw
  • Electrical tape
  • Wire nuts
  • Screwdriver
  • Junction box
  • Insulation

Step 1: Turn Off the Power

Before you begin, turn off the power to the circuit that you will be working on. This can be done at the circuit breaker panel.

Step 2: Cut the Hole

Use a hole saw to cut a hole in the ceiling for the can light. The hole should be the same size as the outer diameter of the can light.

Step 3: Install the Junction Box

The junction box is what will hold the can light in place. Place the junction box in the hole and secure it with screws. Make sure that the box is level.

Step 4: Wire the Can Light

Connect the wires from the can light to the wires in the junction box. Use electrical tape to insulate the connections. Make sure that the black wires are connected to the black wires, the white wires are connected to the white wires, and the green wires are connected to the green wires.

Step 5: Install the Can Light

Insert the can light into the junction box and twist it to lock it in place. Make sure that the can light is level.

Step 6: Insulate the Can Light

Apply insulation around the can light to prevent air from leaking into the attic. This will help to improve the efficiency of the can light.

Step 7: Turn on the Power

Turn on the power to the circuit and test the can light to make sure that it is working properly.
