How to Repair a Broken Pull Chain on a Ceiling Fan

Ceiling fans are a great way to keep your home cool and comfortable, but if the pull chain breaks, it can be frustrating. Fortunately, repairing a broken pull chain is a relatively easy task that can be completed in a few minutes.

Before you begin, gather the following materials:

  1. New pull chain
  2. Phillips head screwdriver
  3. Needle nose pliers

Once you have your materials, follow these steps:

1.

Turn off the power to the ceiling fan at the circuit breaker.

This is important for your safety. 2.

Remove the light fixture cover.

This is usually held in place by a few screws. 3.

Locate the pull chain switch.

It will be a small, plastic box attached to the ceiling fan motor. 4.

Remove the screws that hold the pull chain switch in place.

There will usually be two or three screws. 5.

Pull the pull chain switch out of the ceiling fan motor.

Be careful not to damage the wires. 6.

Attach the new pull chain to the pull chain switch.

There will be a small hole in the center of the pull chain switch. Simply insert the end of the new pull chain into the hole and pull it through until it is secure. 7.

Reinstall the pull chain switch into the ceiling fan motor.

Make sure that the wires are not pinched or damaged. 8.

Tighten the screws that hold the pull chain switch in place.

9.

Reinstall the light fixture cover.

10.

Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.

11.

Test the pull chain to make sure it is working properly.

If you follow these steps, you should be able to repair a broken pull chain on a ceiling fan in a few minutes. Here are some additional tips:

  • If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to hire a qualified electrician to repair the pull chain for you.
  • Be careful not to overtighten the screws when you are reassembling the pull chain switch.
  • If the pull chain is still not working after you have repaired it, there may be a problem with the ceiling fan motor. You will need to contact a qualified electrician to diagnose and repair the problem.
