How to Repair a Pull Cord on a Ceiling Fan
If the pull cord on your ceiling fan has broken, don't despair. It's a relatively easy repair that you can do yourself with a few simple tools.
Here are the steps on how to repair a pull cord on a ceiling fan:
1. Safety first
Before you start, make sure to turn off the power to the ceiling fan at the circuit breaker. This will prevent you from getting shocked while you're working.
2. Remove the light kit
Most ceiling fans have a light kit that is attached to the bottom of the fan. To remove the light kit, simply unscrew the screws that are holding it in place.
3. Identify the pull cord switch
Once the light kit is removed, you will see the pull cord switch. It is usually a small, white or black plastic box with two wires attached to it.
4. Disconnect the wires
Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws that are holding the wires to the pull cord switch. Once the screws are loose, you can pull the wires off of the switch.
5. Replace the pull cord switch
Take the new pull cord switch and connect the wires to it. Make sure that the wires are connected to the correct terminals. The black wire should be connected to the terminal that is marked with a black screw, and the white wire should be connected to the terminal that is marked with a white screw.
6. Tighten the screws
Once the wires are connected, tighten the screws that are holding them in place. Make sure that the screws are tight enough so that the wires will not come loose.
7. Reinstall the light kit
Once the pull cord switch is replaced, you can reinstall the light kit. Simply screw the light kit back into place.
8. Test the pull cord
Turn the power back on to the ceiling fan and test the pull cord. The pull cord should now work properly.
Additional tips
- If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to call a qualified electrician to repair the pull cord on your ceiling fan.
- Make sure to use the correct size screws when you are replacing the pull cord switch. If the screws are too small, they will not hold the wires in place and the pull cord will not work properly.
- If the pull cord is frayed or damaged, it is best to replace it with a new one.
