How to Replace a Ceiling Light with No Ground
Replacing a ceiling light with no ground is a straightforward task that can be completed in a few simple steps. While it is not as common as replacing a light with a ground wire, it is still possible and safe to do with the right precautions.
Safety First
Before you begin, turn off the power to the light fixture at the circuit breaker or fuse box. This will prevent any electrical shocks. Also, make sure that the light fixture is cool to the touch before handling it.
Tools and Materials
To replace a ceiling light with no ground, you will need the following tools and materials:
- New ceiling light fixture
- Screwdriver
- Wire cutters
- Electrical tape
Step 1: Remove the Old Light Fixture
Using a screwdriver, remove the screws that hold the old light fixture in place. Carefully lower the fixture until it is completely detached from the ceiling.
Step 2: Disconnect the Wires
Locate the two wires that are connected to the old light fixture. These wires will typically be black and white. Using wire cutters, cut the wires about 6 inches from the light fixture.
Step 3: Prepare the Wires
Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the wires. Twist the bare wires together to form a secure connection.

Carefully lift the new light fixture into place and align it with the mounting bracket on the ceiling.
Insert the screws into the holes on the mounting bracket and tighten them until the light fixture is securely attached.
