How to Replace a Ceiling Light with a Recessed Light Fixture

Recessed lighting is a popular choice for homes because it provides a clean, modern look and evenly distributes light throughout a room. Replacing a ceiling light with a recessed light fixture is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a few hours. Here are the steps on how to do it:

Materials You'll Need:

  • Recessed light fixture
  • Electrical wire
  • Wire nuts
  • Junction box
  • Drywall saw
  • Screwdriver
  • Electrical tape

Step 1: Turn Off the Power

Before you start working on the electrical system, it is important to turn off the power to the light fixture. You can do this by flipping the circuit breaker or removing the fuse that powers the fixture.

Step 2: Remove the Existing Light Fixture

Once the power is off, you can remove the existing light fixture. Most light fixtures are held in place by screws or clips. Remove the screws or clips and carefully lower the fixture from the ceiling.

Step 3: Cut a Hole for the Recessed Light Fixture

Using a drywall saw, cut a hole in the ceiling for the recessed light fixture. The hole should be the same size as the diameter of the fixture.

Step 4: Install the Junction Box

The junction box is a metal box that houses the electrical connections for the light fixture. Install the junction box in the hole you cut in the ceiling. The junction box should be flush with the ceiling.

Step 5: Wire the Light Fixture

Connect the electrical wires from the light fixture to the electrical wires in the junction box. Make sure to connect the wires correctly: black to black, white to white, and green to green. Twist the wires together and secure them with wire nuts.

Step 6: Install the Light Fixture

Insert the light fixture into the hole in the ceiling. The fixture should fit snugly into the hole. Secure the fixture in place with the screws or clips that came with the fixture.

Step 7: Turn on the Power

Turn on the power to the light fixture and test it to make sure it is working properly.

Tips:

  • If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to hire a qualified electrician to replace the light fixture for you.
  • Make sure the recessed light fixture is the correct size for the hole you cut in the ceiling.
  • Use a level to make sure the light fixture is installed evenly.
  • Recessed light fixtures can get hot, so it is important to install them in a well-ventilated area.
