How to Wire a Ceiling Light and Fan

Ceiling light fixture
Ceiling fan
Electrical wire

Step 1: Safety first

Before you begin, turn off the power to the circuit that you will be working on at the breaker panel. Also, wear safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself from electrical shock and debris.

Step 2: Install the ceiling light

If you are installing a new ceiling light, start by attaching the mounting bracket to the electrical box in the ceiling. Then, connect the wires from the light fixture to the wires in the electrical box, matching black to black, white to white, and green or bare copper to ground. Twist the wires together and secure them with wire nuts. Finally, mount the light fixture to the mounting bracket and turn on the power to test it.

Step 3: Install the ceiling fan

If you are installing a ceiling fan, start by attaching the mounting bracket to the electrical box in the ceiling. Then, connect the wires from the fan to the wires in the electrical box, matching black to black, white to white, and green or bare copper to ground. Twist the wires together and secure them with wire nuts. Next, mount the fan to the mounting bracket and connect the wires from the light kit to the wires in the fan housing. Finally, turn on the power to test the fan and light.

Step 4: Balance the fan

If the fan is wobbling, you can balance it by attaching the included balancing kit to the bottom of the fan. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for balancing the fan.
