Installing a Light Fixture Where a Ceiling Fan Was
Replacing a ceiling fan with a light fixture is a relatively easy project that can be completed in a few hours. Here are the steps you need to follow:
Materials you'll need:
- New light fixture
- Screwdriver
- Wire cutters
- Electrical tape
- Ceiling box
- Ground wire
Step 1: Turn off the power to the ceiling fan.
This is done by flipping the circuit breaker or removing the fuse that supplies power to the fan. If you are not sure which circuit breaker or fuse to turn off, consult with a qualified electrician.
Step 2: Remove the ceiling fan.
Most ceiling fans are attached to the ceiling with two or three screws. Remove these screws and carefully lower the fan from the ceiling. Be sure to support the fan with one hand while you remove the screws with the other.
Step 3: Disconnect the wires from the ceiling fan.
The wires from the ceiling fan will be connected to the wires in the ceiling box. Use a screwdriver to loosen the wire nuts that connect the wires and then pull the wires apart. Be sure to keep track of which wire was connected to which terminal on the ceiling fan.
Step 4: Install the new fixture.
Thread the wires from the new fixture through the center hole in the ceiling box. Connect the wires from the fixture to the wires in the ceiling box using wire nuts. Be sure to match the colors of the wires together. The ground wire (usually green or bare copper) must be connected to the ground wire in the ceiling box.
Step 5: Secure the new fixture to the ceiling.
Most light fixtures are secured to the ceiling with two or three screws. Insert the screws through the holes in the fixture and tighten them until the fixture is snug against the ceiling.
Step 6: Turn on the power to the light fixture.
Flip the circuit breaker or insert the fuse that supplies power to the light fixture. The light fixture should now be working.
Tips:
- If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to hire a qualified electrician to install the light fixture.
- Be sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific light fixture you are installing.
- If you are replacing a ceiling fan with a light fixture that is heavier, you may need to install a new ceiling box.
