Removing a Ceiling Light Electrical Box

Step-by-Step Instructions

Disconnect Wires: Locate the wires connected to the electrical box and carefully disconnect them. Use wire cutters to trim the wires, leaving a few inches of length for reconnection later.
Remove Screws: Unscrew the screws that secure the electrical box to the ceiling joists or drywall. There may be two or more screws.
Pull Down Box: Gently pull the electrical box straight down to detach it from the ceiling. If the box is stuck, use a flashlight to inspect for any remaining screws or obstacles.
Remove Old Box (Optional): If you are replacing the old electrical box with a new one, you can now remove the old box completely. Use a screwdriver to carefully pry off the plaster or drywall around the box.
Install New Box (Optional): If you are installing a new electrical box, follow the manufacturer's instructions to mount and secure it to the ceiling.
Reconnect Wires: Connect the wires to the new or existing electrical box. Twist the ends of the wires together and wrap them securely with electrical tape.
Push Box into Ceiling: Carefully push the electrical box back into the ceiling until it is flush with the surface.
Secure Screws: Drive the screws into the electrical box to secure it to the ceiling.
