Replacing a Ceiling Light Fixture with a Can: A Step-by-Step Guide

Updating your ceiling lighting can significantly enhance the ambiance and functionality of any room. Replacing a standard ceiling light fixture with a recessed can light is a popular and versatile option. 2. Remove the Existing Light Fixture

Unscrew the screws on the ceiling that secure the existing light fixture. Carefully detach the light fixture from the ceiling and pull it down slightly. Locate the wires connected to the fixture and note their colors. Typically, a black wire is the hot wire, a white wire is the neutral wire, and a green or bare copper wire is the ground wire.

3. Prepare the Electrical Box

Locate the electrical box in the ceiling where the new can light will go. If there is no electrical box, you'll need to install one. For this, consult with an electrician. Assuming there is a box, make sure it's securely fastened to the joists above. Remove the knockout on the side of the box to make room for the wires.

4. Connect the Wires

Strip about half an inch of insulation from the ends of the wires coming from the ceiling and from the new can light. Twist the bare copper ends of the black wires together using a wire nut. Do the same for the white wires and the ground wires. Push the wire nuts securely onto the wire connections.

5. Mount the Can Light

Insert the wires into the electrical box and gently push the can light up into the hole until it fits snugly. If the can light has adjustable springs, secure them to the sides of the hole to hold the light in place. Some can lights may require screws or nails for additional support.

6. Trim and Install the Cover
