Replacing A Broken Pull Chain Switch On Ceiling Fan
Ceiling fans are a great way to keep your home cool and comfortable during the hot summer months. But what happens when the pull chain switch breaks? Don't worry, it's a relatively easy fix that you can do yourself with a few simple tools.
Tools You'll Need
- New pull chain switch
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Wire cutters
- Electrical tape
Safety First
Before you start, be sure to turn off the power to the ceiling fan at the circuit breaker or fuse box. This will prevent you from getting shocked.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Remove the old pull chain switch. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screw that holds the pull chain switch in place. Once the screw is removed, you can simply pull the old switch out.
- Cut the wires. Use wire cutters to cut the two wires that are connected to the old switch. Be sure to cut the wires close to the switch so that you have enough wire to work with.
- Strip the wires. Use a wire stripper to remove about 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the wires.
- Connect the wires to the new switch. Twist the ends of the two wires together and then wrap them around the corresponding terminals on the new switch. Be sure to tighten the screws on the terminals to secure the wires.
- Install the new pull chain switch. Push the new switch into the housing until it clicks into place. Then, use a Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the screw that holds the switch in place.
- Turn on the power. Go to the circuit breaker or fuse box and turn on the power to the ceiling fan. The pull chain switch should now be working properly.
Troubleshooting
If the pull chain switch is still not working after you have replaced it, there may be a problem with the wiring. Check the connections to make sure that they are tight and secure. You may also need to replace the wires if they are damaged.
If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to call a qualified electrician to replace the pull chain switch for you.
