Wire A Ceiling Light To Plug

Want to add some extra light to a room without having to do any major electrical work? Wiring a ceiling light to a plug is a relatively simple project that can be completed in just a few hours. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it.

What You'll Need

  • Ceiling light fixture
  • Electrical outlet
  • Wire strippers
  • Electrical tape
  • Screwdriver

Step 1: Turn Off the Power

Before you start any electrical work, it's important to turn off the power to the circuit that you'll be working on. You can do this by flipping the breaker or removing the fuse.

Step 2: Remove the Existing Light Fixture

If there is an existing light fixture in the ceiling, you'll need to remove it before you can install the new one. To do this, simply unscrew the screws that are holding it in place and carefully pull it down.

Step 3: Cut the Wires

Once the old light fixture is removed, you'll need to cut the wires that are connected to it. Use wire strippers to remove about 1/2 inch of insulation from the end of each wire.

Step 4: Connect the Wires

Now it's time to connect the wires from the light fixture to the wires from the electrical outlet. The black wire from the light fixture should be connected to the black wire from the outlet, and the white wire from the light fixture should be connected to the white wire from the outlet. Use electrical tape to secure the connections.

Step 5: Install the Light Fixture

Once the wires are connected, you can install the new light fixture. Simply screw it into place in the ceiling.

Step 6: Turn On the Power

Once the light fixture is installed, you can turn on the power to the circuit and test it out. If the light turns on, then you've successfully wired it to the plug.

Tips

  • If you're not comfortable working with electricity, it's best to hire a qualified electrician to do the job for you.
  • Make sure to use the correct size wire for the job. The wire size will be listed on the light fixture packaging.
  • Don't overload the circuit. Make sure that the light fixture you're installing doesn't draw too much power for the circuit.
